Sculpture & Nature

The Schlossgut Schwante Sculpture Park provides a rare environment to explore sculpture in Northern and Eastern Germany, located only 25 km outside of Berlin and 45 minutes from Berlin-Mitte. The sculpture park opened to the public in 2020 with its inaugural exhibition Sculpture & Nature, showing works of leading international artists including Jean Arp, Dan Graham, Björn Dahlem, Gregor Hildebrandt or Hicham Berrada. Featuring new commissions from David Jacobson and Paul McCarthy, the exhibition explores relationships between art and nature.

The exhibition Sculpture & Nature places works in conversation with their surroundings; 29 sculptures inhabit an expanse of rural greenery, offering a holistic outdoor art experience in which art and sculpture can merge. Sculptures include Echo by Carsten Nicolai, a dedicated meditation space reflecting a similar echo chamber to the one the artist discovered in Angkor Wat. A neon work by Björn Dahlem will also be presented, nearby works from NILS-UDO and Martin Creed. Lining the trees and dotted across the park’s grounds are hammocks and chairs, creating moments to rest and absorb the artworks on view.

What is the significance of art to us at Schlossgut Schwante? It is a zone of free thinking and speculative imagination. Art refers to a long history, puts itself in context, and at the same time opens up new horizons. For us, the innovation of our project lies in the architectural peculiarity of the site. The landscape park, with its many different levels and types of vegetation, in combination with the striking facade of the castle, always offers new perspectives. We invite you to share them with us, and to discover some of your own!
